TAIPEI, April 1 Asia Pulse - Mainland Affairs Council Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen annouced Monday the suspension of direct shipping links between Taiwan's frontline island of Matsu and mainland China because of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak on the mainland.
However, similar links between the frontline island of Kinmen and the mainland will be exempt from the measures because of Kinmen has the medical facilities to cope with the disease.
The relatively heavier traffic between Kinmen and the mainland and the significant consequences such a suspension could bring about is another reason behind the government's decision not to halt the shipping links for the time being.
Taiwanese who are trapped in Matsu because of the suspension will be ferried back to the mainland by the local government, said Tsai.
Meanwhile the Matsu authorities will step up efforts to crack down on smuggling to prevent the spread of SARS from the mainland, Tsai said.
The central government will improve Matsu's capability to fight the disease and might resume ferry services to and from the mainland once the island is capable of detecting and treating the disease, Tsai went on.
There is no question that this unilateral action will offend the mainland authorities as they should understand that Taiwan intends no offense, Tsai said at a hastily called press conference.
