Virgin Express, the Brussels-based low-cost airline, on Thursday confirmed it had joined the list of companies bidding for assets of Air Lib, the failed French carrier.
The move by the airline, which is controlled by Sir Richard Branson, was made with CMA-CGM, a French shipping company.
It faces stiff competition from European rivals including EasyJet of the UK, Aeris of France and Air France, the domestic market leader.
