MEXICAN state oil firm Petroleo Mexicanos is set to tender for 23 offshore drilling rigs for its 2003 and 2004 well operations, writes Martyn Wingrove .

Pemex has already issued tenders for ten rigs and analysts expect the oil firm to execute more over the next three months, which would raise utilisation and drilling rates in the US side of the Gulf of Mexico.

Pemex continues to seek additional offshore rigs for 2003 exploration and development drilling activities, plus for its seasonal workover programme on its shallow-water fields.

Technical bids will be opened between late April and late June for a total of ten rigs, involving three semisubmersibles and seven jack-ups.

Additionally, a tender package is likely to be issued in late March for three semi-submersibles to commence work between November 2003 and May 2004.

So far tenders remain outstanding against two semi-submersibles and a jack-up requirement.
