UK TRANSPORT Secretary Alistair Darling, in a rare sortie into the world of shipping, has said an expanded UK register could safeguard the British shoreline, writes Jerry Frank.

Mr Darling MP broke his silence on shipping matters in Harwich accompanying his wife at the naming ceremony of the roll-on, roll-off passenger ferry Stena Britannica.

Prime Minister Tony Blair last June installed the Edinburgh Central MP and former Pensions and Works Minister as head of the newly established Ministry for Transport.
