HUMAN error was probably to blame for the grounding of the RMS M'lheim near Land's End, the ship's charterer admitted yesterday, writes Katrin Berkenkopf and Janet Porter.

However, insurers do not think they face an excessively large bill for damages, with much of the diesel oil dispersed in the sea and most of the cargo regarded as sinkable.
Hull underwriters are expected to confirm that the ship is a total constructive loss very soon, said Martin Nannen of charterer Rhein Maas und Seeschiffahrtskontor's insurance department, as it cannot be salvaged.
The hull was insured about E 4.6m ($5m) in the German market.
