FERRY giant Stena Line's new boss, Gunnar Blomdahl, hopes that two new superferries to serve UK routes costing E 200m ($215m) will help to reverse losses sustained since the European Union abolition of duty-free.
The recently appointed 47-year-old Swede said that the addition of the roll-on, roll-off passenger ferry Stena Britannica, launched in Harwich on Friday, will further boost UK freight volumes that are up 13% since 2001.
'The freight market is growing in the North Sea and the Stena Britannica will reinforce our position,' said Mr Blomdahl. 'Freight volumes have increased since the end of duty free in 1999 and now represent around 40% of our business.'
Mr Blomdahl, whose predecessor, Bo Severed, stepped down due to ill-health in January, aims, in his first year at the helm, to see recently improved business put Stena Line in the black for 2003.
