AN ELECTRIC spark was to blame for the 1998 blaze and crash of an MD-11 Swissair jet with the loss of all 229 people on board, an investigation has concluded.

The US Transportation Safety Board (TSB) has issued a full report that puts the crash down to faulty wiring in the plane's in-flight entertainment system and possibly also aircraft wiring.

A spark ignited the metal cover of a thermal insulation blanket in the cockpit ceiling behind the pilots.

This caused a fire that swept through the aircraft out of control, seeped smoke into the cockpit of flight 111, barely an hour into its journey, and caused the electrical systems to fail 13 ...
