The export of food products from India to the US is likely to be affected when the proposed Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations will come into effect. India's share in the $50- billion US food imports is just $1 billion. The regulator will implement the Public Health Security and Bio-terrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002, which asks for prior notification of imported food to commence by 12 Dec 2003.

Since there are very few flights from India directly to the US, perishable cargo will be hit with the new regulations. The cargo from India is transhipped in the Gulf or European countries and the FDA …
