Venezuela's economy will shrink significantly in 2003, and the entire country faces an uncertain fate. AEI scholar Mark Falcoff argues that this state of affairs is largely due to the country's radical president, Hugo Chavez. Chavez has been unable to compromise with his myriad opponents, and as a result may not survive much longer.
Falcoff writes that Chavez "regards all opposition as immoral." He has wrecked the state-run oil company--the country's main economic engine--by replacing capable managers with cronies devoted to himself and his supposed "revolution."
Chavez's failure to lead has inspired many efforts to remove him from office. This could happen if the legislature, which has until now mostly served as a rubber stamp, is able to force new elections through a constitutional amendment or impeachment proceedings.
