A new report from two think tanks--one Canadian, the other American --evaluates the relative economic freedom of every American state and all major Canadian provinces. Assessing the overall size of government, level of taxation, and several measures of the intrusiveness of government regulation, the researchers find that economic freedom has increased, overall, in both nations since the early 1980s.
In general, states and provinces with lower taxes and smaller government saw faster economic growth during the 1980s and 1990s, and enjoy higher standards of living today. An economic freedom index compiled by the Vancouver-based Fraser Institute indicates that all Canadian provinces except Alberta have more red tape and taxation than all 50 American states. Alberta was ranked in the middle of the American pack, largely thanks to lower taxation.
