A new report from two think tanks--one Canadian, the other American --evaluates the relative economic freedom of every American state and all major Canadian provinces. Assessing the overall size of government, level of taxation, and several measures of the intrusiveness of government regulation, the researchers find that economic freedom has increased, overall, in both nations since the early 1980s.
In general, states and provinces with lower taxes and smaller government saw faster economic growth during the 1980s and 1990s, and enjoy higher standards of living today.
