America has more overweight people than any other country in the world. Among children, the epidemic of expanding waistlines has become exceptionally dire: Weight-linked diseases such as type-2 diabetes that once afflicted only adults have become much more common among children. While she does not altogether dismiss the theories that expanding portion sizes, genetics, and affluence have made kids fatter, Eberstadt believes that the influx of mothers into the workplace does the most to explain the ever-expanding girth of America's kids.
