When he was running the Senate last year as majority leader, Tom Daschle actually pulled the energy bill from the Senate Energy Committee because a majority of the members were anxious to approve new oil drilling in Alaska. Better to thwart democracy than let President Bush win, went the logic. In an attempt to get a grossly overdue energy bill compromise through the Senate, House leaders then offered to place an additional 10 million acres of Alaska's north slope off limits as permanent wilderness area. All that the Democrats had to do was allow oil exploration in 2,000 acres that show great promise ...
