THE SCULPTOR'S WIFE 
(The soft sculptures of Claes Oldenburg 
were sewn by his wife) 
 
   Perhaps it happened this way. 
   They met at an artists' party 
   and he admired her dress. 
   (Marimekko printed cotton? 
   Very big in the `sixties.) 
   "I made it myself," she smiled, 
   "I've always loved to sew." 
   Next thing, a few dates later, 
   and he's wondering if she'd like 
   to run up this `burger for him, 
   and she, insane with love, 
   is saying yes. 
 
   Yards and yards of canvas 
   were hard on her machine, 
   but after they were married
