The shepherd and his wife lived on the upper side of the road leading to the old Roman bridge.

Their isolated abode was a small, square building with rough stone walls, low roof and paved stone floor. Inside was a small storage area, a dining-table with two wooden benches, and an elevated stone fireplace. An array of pots hung from the wall behind it. A tall double bed stood against the far wall. The room was cold in winter and hot in summer. It was always dark. Tired twinkles of light came through the fissures in the roof tiles and a small window in the back wall.

Around the main dwelling an assortment of sheds leaned against each other.
