An Improbability Of Cranes.
They appeared in an Easter sky just before sunset
I was first to hear them, and heard before I saw them.
Their sound was a tuneless yodelling
The sun sent red-gold notes from their wings
The line became a cluster, then landed--
a ceremonious coming-to-ground in the ploughed field.
Migration had thinned them, body and number.
Their grace on land is an awkward one--
slow, a mincing walk that says "this ground simply will not do"
or the mono-footed stance that tempts kids
to sneak up behind and push them over.
Necks just begging to be wrung ...
