The tiny Alpine village of Thredbo, NSW, appears to be Australia's answer to Aspen, Colorado.

Just as with the famous North American winter playground for the rich and famous, Thredbo is attracting wealthy people willing to cough up cash for exclusive, isolated properties.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics issued Census 2001 statistics this week that ranked Thredbo as Australia's wealthiest community.

According to the bureau's Selected Characteristics for Urban Centres report, the average weekly income of those who called Thredbo home on the August 7, 2001, Census night was $1821. …
