Jadavpur University's English Department hosted a seminar on the relevance and the future of English studies in India last week, calling it W(h)ither English Studies? In his keynote address Professor Sukanta Chaudhuri presented a dismal picture of the plight faced by English departments in India, Malaysia and Bangladesh. As if on cue, Niaz Zaman of Dhaka University, Bangladesh, gave an insider's view of the situation in his country, touching on the failure of the corrective measures taken and the threat posed by private universities.
