Any technology that brings people closer together will be successful _ such is the appetite for people to communicate with one another better and to stay in touch. This may seem to be stating the obvious, but I think it needs reasserting, since it underlies the success of much of what we call IT today.
Indeed, ``IT'' is becoming an old-fashioned acronym; today information technology has become ICT (information and communications technology), thanks to the role played by data communications _ and I am hearing the refrain: ``delivering information at any time, to any device, and to anywhere'' more and more often these days.
Just a decade or so earlier, the industry that we covered in these pages was mostly ``electronic data processing.''
