Bahrain will stop issuing or renewing permits for foreign workers by 2005, Labour and Social Affairs Minister Dr Majeed Al Alawi pledged at a meeting with community leaders on Saturday.
He also promised to introduce a package which will dramatically reduce the number of unemployed Bahrainis by next year.
In another meeting with representatives from the printing sector, Dr Al Alawi said he hoped all industry employees would be Bahraini within two years.
"In the meeting with publishers he told them that by the end of 2004 this sector should be 100 per cent Bahrainised," said a ministry spokesman.
The meeting on Saturday was attended by religious leaders Shaikh Ali Al Akry and Shaikh Mohammed Al Jidhafsi.
