Following Napoleon's final exile in 1815, the French became fascinated by every aspect of Anglo-Scottish civilization. British literature in particular was a rich lode of subject matter for French artists, and it is no coincidence that the novels of Sir Walter Scott were published simultaneously in English in Edinburgh and in French in Paris.

In 1820 and 1821 Theodore Gericault lived in England, where he was most impressed by British art of the time. Artists and educated tourists criss-crossed the English Channel, and in 1821 some twenty thousand British citizens traveled to France.
