Hendrik Goltzius was renowned during his lifetime for his prints and drawings. Born in the duchy of Westphalia in 1558, he moved to Haarlem, the Netherlands, in 1577. His fame spread quickly, and he became so well known that when he traveled in Germany and Italy in 1590-1591 he concealed his identity to avoid being bothered. The mannerist style, of which Goltzius was a master, was at its peak Following a stay in Rome, where he saw the works of Michelangelo and Raphael, and, after his exposure to such northern artists as Albrecht Durer, his style changed and he espoused the classical Renaissance.
