My dad was one of the wisest and hardest-working men I ever knew.
When I was a child growing up in Eufaula, Okla., he held several jobs to support his family of six children--usually more than one job at a time.
He farmed some land, growing much of what my mother served our family at dinnertime. Daddy also was a pastor, and he proudly wore a badge for the Eufaula Police Department for 12 years.
He got an interview and the job with the police department because the chief thought Buddy Watts would be a good cop. No one forced the chief to call him. My dad competed for the job, and he got it because he was qualified.
That's why it was painful to watch a qualified minority coach dance with Jerry Jones and the NFL diversity committee during the Cowboys' "search" for a new coach.
Any regular reader of the SPORTING NEWS knows that in response to a threatened lawsuit, the NFL formed a committee to ensure black coaches and executives get a fair shot at every major job opening.
A mandate such as the NFL's diversity policy has to he careful that it's not just setting minority coaches up for interviews ... but rather, setting them up for success.
