Expect more hiring freezes, salary reductions, tuition increases and reduced enrollments soon, as colleges in states throughout the nation brace for slashed budgets, which may especially harm women.
California is one of the hardest hit states. Expecting a $35 billion state budget deficit, Governor Gray Davis announced plans to reduce funds by 10.5% or $530 million for the community college system, where 108 colleges serve about 2.4 million students, the majority women.
After years of scrimping, public education in Mississippi will receive $2.7 billion in the new budget, an increase of 8% overall, including 9.5% for community colleges and 5% for public ...
