One of the tendencies keeping women from ruling the world (or at least the academy) is a reluctance to take a job unless they are at least 125% qualified for it.
Not so with Dr. Donna Shalala, president of the University of Miami and a veteran of five major positions over the last 30 years. "This is the first time there was ever a consensus that I was qualified," she quipped. "I was in over my head at every job until Miami. In every other job I was a little young and it was a little early in my career," she confessed, but she took the jobs because her mentors urged her to take big career risks.
