THE MAN dubbed the "father of the Internet" wants to launch his baby into outer space.

Visiting Wellington this week from the United States, Vinton Cerf revealed plans for interplanetary Internet which will allow astronauts to communicate with Earth by e-mail and download music and movies.

Dr Cerf has been working with the Internet for more than 30 years and is co-creator of the TCP/IP communications protocol on which the Internet is based.

Today he works in a senior research and development role at American telecommunications company Worldcom. But he is deeply immersed in a project …
