BRISBANE, March 3 Asia Pulse - Australian farmers opposed to genetically-modified (GM) foods have begun an eleven-day national tour lobbying state governments to ban GM crops.
The loosely-aligned Network of Concerned Farmers, concerned about the future social, economic and environmental impact of GM crops, started their tour in Brisbane last night.
The group will visit Toowoomba in Queensland before moving to Victoria, South Australia and NSW.
Western Australia and Tasmania have already passed moratoriums banning GM crops.
The tour comes ahead of a pending decision by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) over whether to grant multinational companies
Monsanto and Bayer permission to grow herbicide-resistant canola.
Currently, only two GM crops, cotton and carnations, are allowed to be grown commercially in Australia.
