CEBU CITY, March 3 Asia Pulse - Tin foil packaging for juices usually end up as trash, however, a local government unit discovered that it could also become a good source of income.
The Bais City local government, with the assistance of the German Development Service, set up in March 2002 the Recycling Initiative Bais City (RIBA), to go into recycling of waste materials.
It is the first organization in Bais city that has gone into business to reuse and recycle materials out of the waste stream.
With this endeavor, RIBA, helped Bais city and nearby municipalities in minimizing wastes at no cost to local governments.
RIBA's first project was to clean up local memorial sites since a study showed that juice tin foil packages are very often thrown away in these areas.
RIBA planned to use these to manufacture shopping bags, gift bags, backpacks, cosmetic bags, wallets, envelopes and others.
During an official trip to Europe, the staff of Cebu Furniture Industry Foundation Inc. (CFIF) saw a shop selling bags made from tin foil packages of a juice carrying a Philippine brand.
