DAVAO CITY, Mar 3 Asia Pulse - New technological advances have rendered the Consumer Act of the Philippines obsolete.
For this reason, a consumer group is now pushing for some amendments to some of the provisions of Republic Act No. 7394.
Hospicio Conanan, president of Konsumo Dabaw, said there's a need to update the Consumer Act to address issues brought about by the advent of cellular phones.
He said the Act was enacted into law in 1991, way before manufacturers and various communication networks made advances on cellular phone technologies.
"Ten years after, the Act is showing its age," he said during the Regional Consumer Conference yesterday.
The popularity of cell phones and short messages system (SMS) texting has made cellular phone industry a consumer concern.
He said amendments to the Act should be done to protect cell phone clients. "The cellular phone owners don't know where to address their grievances," he said.
