SYDNEY, March 3 Asia Pulse - The Medicare levy would not be raised by Labor if elected to government, Opposition Leader Simon Crean said.
Mr Crean's comments came after his health spokesman Stephen Smith last Thursday told journalists he believed taxpayers would support a hike in the 1.5 per cent levy if it went to health initiatives, including halting the freefall in bulk billing.
Mr Crean said on Sunday there would be no increase to taxpayers.
"Let me just make this quite clear, we have no plans to increase the Medicare levy," he told the Seven network.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister John Howard disputed figures suggesting only 70 per cent of doctors were bulk billing.
Mr Howard said bulk billing was as high as 90 per cent in some metropolitan areas.
He called for a sense of proportion in the bulk billing debate.
