BRISBANE, March 3 Asia Pulse - In an Australian first, the award-winning Gowrie Mountain Estate at Toowoomba in Queensland's Darling Downs has started producing canned wine for export.
Owner Ron Newbury said he hit upon the idea two years ago when his son James phoned from Japan to tell him the Japanese could get most things, eatable or drinkable, from a can.
Except, his son told him, good quality wine.
Now the family-run wine business is exporting canned wine overseas.
After appearing at the London Wine show earlier this year, 250ml cans of Gowrie Mountain Estate's shiraz cabernet, chardonnay and a sweet white wine will be sold in England and the United States.
The family business is also looking to export canned wine to Japan - for vending machines.
"It's a changing time and we'd like to think we're at the forefront," Mr Newbury said.
