Indian Kashmir's dovish government swept to a resounding victory in its first electoral test since taking power in November.
Zahoor Ahmed Mir of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) won 73.7 percent in the by-election for Pampore on the outskirts of the summer capital Srinagar, poll results showed on Saturday.
The PDP was founded by Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, who has pledged to wind down Kashmir's 14 years of insurgency with a "healing touch."
The National Conference party, which Sayeed ousted from years of dynastic rule in a coalition with India's main opposition Congress, had hoped for a comeback in the February 26 by-election here.
But its candidate, Mushtaq Ahmed Kuchay, won only 7.9 percent of the vote.
