At least 17 people were killed and over 100 injured when a train carrying tourists to Taiwan's scenic Mount Ali, or Alishan, derailed and rolled over, the fire department of Chiayi County revealed.
Authorities are still compiling the number of casualties but at least 135 people have been injured in the accident, officials said Saturday.
Adding to the chaos, a helicopter crash-landed while airlifting two dead bodies and eight injured passengers to hospitals in neighbouring Kaohsiung County but no further casulties were caused by the crash-landing, the defense ministry told AFP.
The derailment occurred at about 2:09 pm (0609 GMT) when the four-carriage train carrying about 150 passengers was crossing a 20-meter bridge, the forestry bureau said.
Star Huang, director-general of the bureau, said a preliminary investigation showed that brake failure could have caused the accident.
"The driver has reported that he discovered the brake didn't work and he couldn't control the vehicle when the train was running through the first curve (of the rail section)," Huang said.
