(From Agence France Presse)
New Cypriot president Tassos Papadopoulos appointed his 11-member cabinet, tasked with trying to reunify the divided island so a united Cyprus can enter the European Union in 2004.
The ministers, including one woman, were sworn in at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia and handed their portfolios by Papadopoulos, the island's fifth president.
It is a coalition that now takes power for a designated five-year term after Papadopoulos toppled incumbent Glafcos Clerides in February 16 polls.
The line-up includes the president's own centre-right Diko party, as well as those who backed him in the election -- the communists Akel, the social democrats Kisos and the Greens.
As the island's largest party, Akel has taken the most portfolios with four, followed by Diko with three and the socialists with two.
The Greens did not get a cabinet post, but were involved in consultations that led to an independent they backed being chosen as agriculture minister.
