Several thousand demonstrators gathered in the Turkish capital to protest a possible war in neighbouring Iraq and the likely approval by parliament, later in the day, of the deployment of over 60,000 US soldiers in the country.

Parliament was also expected to approve the dispatch of Turkish soldiers into northern Iraq in case of war.

"We do not want to be US soldiers, we do not want to be US puppets," read one of the placards carried by the protestors as they marched Saturday to the Sihhiye square in downtown Ankara where a rally was to be held.

"We do not need a war for oil," read another.

"Saying yes to war is treason to the country," chanted protestors ahead of the parliamentary vote.
