A man arrested for killing two policemen outside the US consulate in Karachi has told interrogators he wanted to punish the protectors of "infidels", a senior police official revealed.

Police named the accused as Zulfiqar Ali but said other details were not yet available as he was under interrogation.

Karachi police chief Asad Ashraf Malik said the alleged assailant was a "tough guy" who risked his own life in committing the attack, the second outside the US mission in this southern port city in eight months.

"What he did was nothing short of suicide as he completely risked his life," Malik said Saturday.

The US consulate is a heavily protected area, where police and paramilitary guards patrol around the clock. Anyone risking their life to kill such guards must be a very "tough guy", he added.

Seven policemen were also injured in the assault that saw the attacker, already armed with a pistol, grab a submachine gun from a guard and then spray the others with bullets.
