CATHOLICS walking home in Ballymena after a night at the pub have their hands on their mobile phones with the 999 number already keyed - so that any incident can be quickly reported literally at the touch of a button.

One man, who declined to be named, said: "I take no chances because if a car stops I can phone 999 and shout out the number plate or a description.

"Although it mightn't be enough to save me from a hammering, at least it might give the police something to go on and stop it happening to somebody else."

Last weekend, a Catholic man was viciously attacked in a sectarian attack in the Co Antrim town.

It was the latest in a long line of sectarian-related incidents on both sides of the community in Ballymena in recent months.
