FREEMASONS and members of all 'secret societies' who are members of the District Policing Partnership Board should declare an interest, according to the Deputy Speaker at Stormont.
SDLP man Donovan McClelland, who is the current vice-chair of the Antrim Board, stated that while "Freemasonry should not bar people from the Partnership, the 'majority of nationalists feel that membership of any exclusive secret society could create a conflict of interest."
And this conflict, he said, could 'create internal tensions.'
"I see my work on the Partnership as policing the police and, in some cases, policing the unionists who want to wreck the Agreement," he said.
"This means that we should all be aware of any special relationship on the Policing Partnership Boards. I believe that it is very necessary for both police officers attending meetings and members of the District Policing Partnership to declare if they are Masons.
