No, lamb does not stink. Let's make that clear right away. Samantha Jamieson, Japan chief executive for industry association Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), said that many Japanese do not buy lamb because "they have the perception that...it has a very strong smell."
"But part of that is a perception from when we used to send a lot of mutton here," she continued. "And mutton definitely has a much stronger smell."
Makoto Kinjo, president of import firm Anzco Foods Japan, agrees that lamb suffers unfairly from its association with mutton.
