The following is a translation of the Henshu Techo column from The Yomiuri Shimbun's Feb. 28 issue.

In his novel "Kusamakura," Soseki Natsume (1867-1916) writes, "We feel sleepy in spring," later adding: "Cats forget to catch rats and people forget to repay borrowed money. The latter may occasionally lose their senses as they forget where their own souls are."
It is early spring and days in the Kanto region and areas further west are becoming gentler and sunnier. Full spring will soon come, a time when we will be able to reflect on a phrase from Chinese poet Meng Haoran (689-740), who said: "Sleeping on a spring night can be so comfortable that one doesn't wake up even when dawn breaks."
