Law may release info on biological parents
Yomiuri
Children born to women through the donation of sperm or eggs will be able to access the names, addresses and other data on their biological parents if the health, labor and welfare minister accepts the recommendation of an advisory panel to draft laws to this effect, sources said.
A division of the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry's Health Sciences Council, which is studying the establishment of rules governing fertility treatments, will compile a final report near the end of this month advocating the legislation of this process, ministry sources said.
If the laws are brought into effect, Japan will become one of the few nations to fully acknowledge the right of such children to learn about their biological parents, following several European countries.
According to the sources, members of the division said that if the process of artificially-induced pregnancies was to continue in Japan, children should be able to learn about their biological parents.
