Moriyama takes cut in pay in prison case
Yomiuri
Justice Minister Mayumi Moriyama said Friday she would voluntarily return three months worth of salary and seek punishment of 10 people in connection with last year's physical abuse by guards of prisoners, one of whom died, at the Nagoya Prison.
Chishu Sakurai, former warden of the prison in Miyoshicho, Aichi Prefecture; Mitsutoshi Matsuo, former head of the inmate treatment department; and Yoshiharu Katane, former chief correctional officer, were all transferred to the Nagoya regional Correction Headquarters in November.
They will be punished by a three-month suspension from office, Moriyama said during a press conference held at the Justice Ministry building.
Sakurai earlier handed in a letter of resignation, and he will finish his duties Saturday, she said.
