Govt questions water-quality control
Yomiuri
The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry's periodic inspections of water facilities this fiscal year have raised questions over the quality control of tap water, which has been said to be the safest in the world.
According to ministry officials, more than 40 percent of water facilities have not taken measures to conform to ministry guidelines for eliminating pathogenic microbes from tap water.
The inspections also found that errors made in laying pipes have resulted in industrial water being supplied to households.
As water-quality control is one of the themes of the World Water Forum to be held in Japan next month, it is hoped that, as the host nation and a supposed model for others, Japan will swiftly map out measures to deal with this problem.
