Doctor acquitted of poisoning colleagues
Yomiuri
KYOTO
The Kyoto District Court on Friday acquitted a doctor who formerly worked for the National Sanatorium Utano Hospital in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, of poisoning seven other doctors at the hospital with sodium azide in 1998.
Prosecutors, who demanded a prison term of 1! years for the man in November 2002, most likely will appeal the ruling to a higher court.
Hiroshi Ishida, 46, then head of the hospital's internal medicine department, was indicted in March 2000 for allegedly putting 0.8 grams of sodium azide into an electric water heater in a staff lounge on the second floor of the hospital, and poisoning seven doctors who drank coffee and tea made with hot water from the heater on Oct. 28, 1998.
