Pregnant women who regularly eat fish and fish products sold in Hong Kong markets may be putting their unborn babies at risk of mercury poisoning, a study to be released today shows.
Chinese University paediatricians analysed blood samples from more than 1,000 pairs of mothers and newborns. They also examined mercury levels in a variety of fish species and products sold in wet markets, including fish balls, garoupa and mackerel, said paediatrics professor Fok Tai-fai.
