For all the consternation generated by the Ratings Percentage Index, its enemies should remember there are more ominous ways to rearrange the letters that form its handy acronym. Given the choice between RPI and RIP, I know which one to choose.
Of course, there is no shortage of coaches who would kill the RPI if given half a chance. Their tirades generally reach a peak toward the latter part of February, when they've looked at too many videotapes of high screen-and-rolls and answered too many questions about whether their team is headed for the NCAA Tournament.
