Syracuse. The Orangemen (4-8) showed flashes of competitiveness during their first losing season since 1986, especially getting good performances from RB Walter Reyes. The defense can't get much worse, and QB R.J. Anderson is experienced, if inconsistent.

Illinois. It took more than half the season for the Illini (5-7) to settle on a starting quarterback and develop some consistency on defense. But now that Jon Beutjer has a firm grip on the quarterback spot, Illinois will get back on track.

Miami (Ohio). With Marshall's Byron Leftwich off to the NFL, Ben Roethlisberger is the league's premier quarterback. The RedHawks (7-5) also will return 1,000-yard rusher Luke Clemens from a team that was in contention for the East Division title until its final game,

Brigham Young. It's not possible to keep the Cougars down for long. BYU (5-7) suffered its first losing season since 1973, but it will return plenty of offensive talent, including leading rusher Marcus Whalen, and some veteran playmakers on defense.

California. NCAA sanctions kept the 7-5 Bears out ...
