It was hardly a puzzle how a team with so many jagged pieces, pounded down with a mallet, couldn't fit into a playoff spot a year ago. What is remarkable is how the Dallas Stars suddenly look seamless.

"I think they have the best team in the NHL," says Capitals general manager George McPhee, on behalf of those who wish they could have moved so well last summer or had a team so constructively shaken by disappointment.

To the core that won the Stanley Cup in 1999 has been added things new, while sticking to old defensive methods of choking opponents blue. For both wannabes and usedtabes, the moral of the Stars' story: It's all about the fit.
