So deep is our fascination with watching a napping giant fall into a full-fledged nightmarish snooze that we've managed to all but overlook the little fellas who are as wide awake as ever. The Lakers are broken and might be unfixable, even if Phil Jackson can find a way to arrange the planets so as to maximize the effectiveness of his team's bounce passes, passing-lane defense and layup drills. Such bad news is cause for rejoicing in some quarters. If outrageous fortune brings slings and arrows, then outrageous fortune followed by sudden calamity brings out the Sherman tanks and Scud missiles.

But if we can pause the battering of the three-time defending champs ...
