In one of the 11 postseason games about to be played, a good chance exists that some team will try to protect a late lead by softening up, or playing a prevent defense.

This sends fans who have been bitten by one or both of the Jack brothers--Frost and Daniels--into various states of rage and hysteria. It pops veins in the foreheads of microphone mouths. The prevent causes widespread pouting and lower-lip curling on the sideline of the team deploying the defense.

But in the end, this defense probably secures the victory.

The prevent is the Michael Jackson of defenses. It has such a bad reputation it needs a disguise in public. Coaches who use it ...
