General Douglas MacArthur's 'final roll call" with the Corps of Cadets at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, was on May 12, 1962. He received the academy's Thayer Award, presented annually to a distinguished U.S. citizen who exemplifies the academy's motto--"Duty, honor, country." He then spoke about the meaning of those three hallowed words. According to A Soldier Speaks: Public Papers and Speeches of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, "This speech was delivered extemporaneously and, as far as can be determined by the editor, had not been written out by General MacArthur prior to its delivery at West Point."
